Mṛgāramātṛprāsāda (P. Migāramātupāsāda; T. Ri dwags ’dzin gyi ma’i khang bzang; C. Luzimu tang; J. Rokushimodō; K. Nokchamo tang 鹿子母堂). Literally, “Hall of Mṛgāra’s Mother”.[1] The name of the monastery inside the Pūrvārāma (P. Pubbārāma), a park located outside the eastern city gate of Śrāvastī, which was constructed for the Buddha by his foremost female lay disciple Viśākhā, who was also known as “Mṛgāra’s Mother.”[1]
- According to tradition it was the Buddha who suggested the erection of this monastery which is said to have consisted of a two-storey building with 500 rooms on each floor, all richly equipped. During the last 20 years of his life, when the Buddha was living at Śrāvastī, he divided his time between the residence (ārāma) donated by Anāthapiṇḍika (Jetavana) and this monastery. For this reason it is assumed that numerous suttas were preached there. Also, it was here that the Buddha gave permission for the Prātimokṣa to be recited in his absence.[2]
