Dharmākara (T. chos kyi 'byung gnas; C. Fazang biqiu 法藏比丘). The bodhisattva who became the buddha Amitabha. According to the Longer Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra, in the distant past, Dharmākara made the vow to become a buddha in the presence of buddha Lokeśvararāja.[1]

Dharmākara made a series of forty-eight vows at this time. The 18th of these vows, the vow that anyone who recites his name can be reborn in the pure land of Amitabha (Sukhavati), is an important feature of Pure Land Buddhism.
