Simsang (C. Shenxiang; J. Shinjō 審祥) (d. c. 744). A Korean monk said to be a disciple of the Chinese master Fazang (643–712) of the Chinese Huayan zong.[1] Simsang was invited to teach in Japan by the Japanese monk Ryōben in 740. This led Simsang transmitting the Huayan teachings to Japan, and the founding of the Japanese Kegon school (which is based on the Huayan teachings).[1] Simsang is regarded as the first patriarch of the Kegon school, and Ryōben as the second patriarch.
