The Tibetan script is a segmental writing system, or abugida, used to write Tibetic languages, such as Tibetan, Dzongkha, Balti, etc. This script is traditionally said to have been developed by Thonmi Sambhota for King Songtsen Gampo.
Thonmi Sambhota based the Tibetan script on the Indian Brahmic scripts.
There are two forms of this script:
- Uchen script: the most common printed form
- Umê script: the hand-written cursive form used in everyday writing
