Wu Zetian (624 – 16 December 705),[1] personal name Wu Zhao, was an empress of the Tang dynasty through her husband Emperor Gaozong and later an empress dowager through her sons Emperor Zhongzong and Emperor Ruizong, holding de facto power during these periods.[2] She subsequently founded and ruled as emperor of the (Wu) Zhou dynasty from 16 October 690 to 21 February 705.[1]

During her 45 year reign, China grew larger, its culture and economy were revitalized, and corruption in the court was reduced.

Shortly after Wu took the throne in her newly established dynasty, she elevated the status of Buddhism above that of Daoism. She officially sanctioned Buddhism by building temples named Dayun Temple (大雲寺) in each prefecture belonging to the capital regions of the two capitals, Luoyang and Chang'an, and created nine senior monks as dukes.
