Wu jing (五經). "Five classics". The five basic works from the Zhou period which were authorized by the emperor in 51 BCE as the standard requirement for educated officials. This set of works served in this core role in Chinese history up through to the premodern period. Since any educated East Asian Buddhist author would automatically be familiar with these, phrases are often cited from them in commentarial literature, Chan discourse, and so forth.[Charles Muller][1]

The five include:[1]

  • Book of Poems 詩經,
  • the Book of Documents 書經,
  • the Book of Changes (Yijing 易經),
  • the Spring and Autumn Annals 春秋, and
  • the Record of Ritual 禮記.
