A prolific author, one of his most famous works is the Ascertainment of the Three Types of Vows, a treatise on the Prātimokṣa, Bodhisattva, and Tantric vows from the Nyingma perspective. This text is still used in many Nyingma curriculums today.[1]

He was born in Mustang, present day Nepal, and both his father and older brother, Lekden Dorje (legs ldan rdo rje, 1452-1565), were accomplished practitioners.[1]
