Vesak [alt. Wesak] (S. Vaiśākha; P. Vesākha; T. sa ga zla ba). The Pāli name for the fourth lunar month of the traditional Indian calendar (corresponding to April–May in the solar calendar).[1] The term also refers to the holiday/festival that falls on 15th day of this month, commemorating the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and parinirvana.[1]

The holiday of Vesak is celebrated in Southeast Asia, in Tibetan Buddhism (where it is known as Saga Dawa Duchen), and in Newar Buddhism (where it is known as Buddha Jayanti).

In the East Asian tradition, the Buddha's Birthday is celebrated during the month of Vesak, while the Buddha's awakening and parinirvana are recognized in the twelfth and eleven months, respectively.[1]
