vaipulya [alt. vaidalya] (cf. P. vedalla; T. shin tu rgyas pa; C. fangdeng; J. hōdō; K. pangdŭng 方等).[1] Literally meaning “vast” or “extensive,” it refers to a particular set of lengthy sūtras or collections of sūtras that each provide a comprehensive overview of Buddhist thought and practice.[2]

Vaipulya is a traditional genre of Buddhist literature, where it is categorized as:[2][3]

In the Mahayana tradition, this category includes individual works such as the Lalitavistara and Saddharmapuṇḍarīka and collections such as the Mahāsannipāta, Buddhāvataṃsaka, Ratnakūta, and the Prajnaparamita sutras.[2]

As a traditional literary genre, vaipulya "corresponds to the Pāli category of vedalla (S. vaidalya), which refers to such catechetical texts as the Sakkapañhasuttanta or the Sammādiṭṭhisutta."[3]
